The Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta (PIDBR) 2023 concluded at Teluk Bahang Dam, setting a new record with 60 teams representing 40 countries – a significant increase from the previous year’s 42 teams from seven countries.
Wong Hon Wai, the State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, highlighted the regatta’s role as a cultural exchange festival, fostering camaraderie and showcasing dragon boat racing skills.
The event’s success was marked by spirited competition and commitment, setting the stage for future editions with the hope of attracting even more participants.
Wong Hon Wai, in his closing speech, emphasised that PIDBR 2023 transcended a mere sports event, evolving into a cultural celebration.
The increased participation, with teams from 40 nations, underscored the regatta’s global appeal. Participants displayed exceptional spirit and dedication throughout the two-day competition, creating an atmosphere of intense competition coupled with warm camaraderie.
Expressing his optimism, Wong Hon Wai expressed hope for continued growth, anticipating an even larger turnout in the next year’s event.
He encouraged participants to carry home cherished memories of competing in Penang, while also urging viewers to sustain their support for the regatta in the future.
The spotlight of this year’s PIDBR shone on the Thai team, ‘Thailand Dragon,’ as they clinched their third title since 2010 in the International Premier Open category.
The team dominated the 400-metre event with a remarkable time of 1:32.47. Their victory surpassed the Philippine Canoe, Kayak, and Dragon Boat Federation’s team (1:35.44) and the Pacific West Dragon Boat Club team (1:36.91).
C Vinya, the coach of Thailand Dragon, expressed their delight in achieving victory after months of rigorous training. Having previously won in 2010 and 2019, the team had set high expectations for success.
Vinya conveyed the team’s pride in this year’s win, promising their return for future challenges. The team received the First Place trophy and the coveted Challenge Trophy, sealing their triumphant performance on the international stage.
Wong Hon Wai’s optimism for increased participation in the next edition reflects the regatta’s growing significance on the international stage.
